Bio:
Kyra was born on Remus to a Romulan family. Her parents were outcasts of Romulus and exiled on Remus for plotting against the Romulan government. At the age of 8, the youngest of 9 children, she was traded to a barren Terran couple in exchange for passage off of Remus for her family. The family settled on a border planet and Kyra never saw them again. She harbors a deep resentment towards them for what she perceives as her abandonment. The Terran couple, Mark and Judy McKay, raised her as their own back on Earth in the Napa Valley. She had a difficult childhood due to her obvious physical differences; and even more difficult teen years. Her Romulan temper landed her in many fights, usually with opponents larger than herself. Despite this, she never backed down from a fight and often returned home from school bloodied and bruised.
As a young adult she learned to control her temper, using Vulcan meditative techniques. She found that she could then pass for Vulcan, and after two years of college pursuing an engineering degree, she applied and was accepted at Star Fleet Academy. She enrolled as Kyra McKay, Vulcan. For the first time in her life, she was not only accepted, but admired. Her keen mind and sarcastic wit made her popular among her teachers and peers. She graduated in the top 1% of her class. She earned degrees in electrical and physical engineering.
She applied for a job on a starship, but at the mandatory physical she was found to be Romulan and was denied the position for lying about her species on the application. She fought the denial in court and won by proving that Romulans were part of the Vulcan species, albeit a distant branch. She further proved that her Terran adoption made her as much a Federation citizen as anyone else. Although she could have then taken the position she had applied for, she did not as she knew there would be prejudice against her, for being Romulan, and for winning her case. She decided to apply for positions on space stations instead. She went back to her birth surname and proudly applied as a Romulan.
