Bio:

Born in the former republic of England, James attended the local schools pushed on by his Mother and Father who later admitted that getting him through school, college and university was like pushing a very big and heavy rock up a very steep hill. His Father, a well respected lawyer and his Mother a teacher both expect James to follow in their footsteps and become a professional of some sort.

During his studies James took a keen interest in old Earth history, in particular the history of the Royal Navy during the twentieth century. The navy had been in the Roberts blood for many hundreds of years but had stopped with his Father who wanted to follow his own path. James did have an uncle who was commanded the U.S.S. Hampshire, an Excelsior class starship. Every time ‘Uncle Tony’ arrived at Earth James would be allowed to visit the U.S.S. Hampshire and became quite popular with the crew. For his 18th birthday he was taken around the solar system and from that moment on James knew his life lay in the stars.

After Joining Starfleet Academy and passing his basic starship training courses coming 5th in his class, he applied for command training but was declined due to lack of experience. To gain the needed experience he was assigned to the U.S.S. Willis, an Oberth class starship.

As the ship was nearly at the end of her useful life, she was running with a reduced crew. This combined with the encouragement of Commander Forrester (the ships commanding officer) gave James valuable experience in tactical, operation navigation and medical/science matters. After 18 months of letter perfect work crewman Roberts was (reluctantly) due for transfer as the U.S.S. Willis was due for retirement. Unknown to James, Commander Forrester had successfully requested that crewman Roberts be allowed onto the officer training program at Starfleet Academy. As a reward for the hard work crewman Roberts had put in for nearly 2 years, Commander Forrester allowed him the privilege of piloting the U.S.S. Willis into Utopia Planatia shipyards for the final time.

During his second year of officer training at the academy the Dominion War began. As the war progressed the requirements for officers and crew were so great that it was decided that his entire year would be put into active service on an accelerated training program. Lt. (jg) Roberts was assigned to the U.S.S. Agincourt, a Miranda Class refit which saw action along the Vulcan borders and also at the battle for Deep Space 9.

Tragedy struck 8 days before the war was officially won when a Dominion fighter made a suicide run into the saucer section of the U.S.S. Hampshire. The U.S.S. Agincourt was the second ship on the scene and recently promoted tactical officer Lt. Roberts personally took charge of the evacuation of the wounded. However before mass transport of the wounded could commence the U.S.S. Hampshire lost all power and explosively decompressed killing 149 members of the crew including his uncle. The loss of such a loved family member ‘right in front of him’ as it were left a mark which he fills with a slightly sarcastic if morbid sense of humor.

Three months after the dominion war ended the U.S.S. Agincourt was in orbit around Vulcan when an internal explosion caused by a faulty photon torpedo, ripped through the ship sending a shrapnel throughout the junior officers mess room. Despite receiving a 1cm wide gash on his right arm which extends to the middle of his back, Lt. Roberts carried three junior officers out of the inferno before a further explosion breached the hull and killed the remaining survivors. Even with the excellent medical treatment provided by the Vulcan Medical Institute the scar could not be completely removed although the facial burns were healed. For saving the lives of 3 officers and in recognition of the wounds he received, Lt. Roberts was under consideration for promotion. Although Lt. Roberts requested that he should not serve on a starship for his next assignment, the eventual command of a starship is still something that he is aiming for.
